在我的老家保康，清明节习俗的形成要上溯先楚时期楚人的祭祀活动。
楚人祭祀的对象分为“天神、地抵、人鬼”。其中，楚人祭祀包括祖先在内的人鬼的主要方式是墓祭。楚人墓祭分为腊祭和春祭。腊祭就是在阴历腊月23日小年之后，楚人给死亡亲友的坟墓上坟，其主要方式是烧祭火，送灯，给坟墓培土。这种风俗主要源于楚人崇火，希望祖坟上冒青烟，后人香火延续不断。腊祭活动以家庭为主。
公元前1043年，第一任楚子熊绎在荆山立国，定都丹阳，也就是现在的保康县马良镇重阳。那时，楚人就开始了春祭活动。
楚人春祭十分隆重。当河边柳树刚吐翠抽条时，楚人便相约到来到祖坟地，修理坟前拜台，植松柏保风水，给坟墓培土，而且坟上的土堆的越高越好。另外，楚人还割去坟墓四周的杂草、荆棘，然后集中烧掉。这些整理坟墓环境的工作结束后，楚人便挑来饭菜，众人席地而坐。族长先在坟墓前的拜台上摆放酒、菜、饭，然后又磕头，依次叫死去的祖宗吃饭。完毕，众人方可用餐。

保康的清明节还有一个传说：相传从前荆山有一个书生，他的父亲为了让他能够继续读书求士，在伐木中被树木砸死了。书生安葬了父亲后外出考学，到了清明节那天也没有给父亲的坟墓上插清明吊。有一日夜里，书生梦见了父亲。父亲指责书生不孝，让他在阴间倍受折磨。原来，到了清明节这天，阴间要举行清明大会。每个亡灵要高举着清明吊参加评选，看谁的清明吊漂亮。没有清明吊的亡灵则被赶出会场，被罚苦工。听罢，书生赶快跪下给父亲磕头，哭着承认自己的过错。哭着哭着，书生醒了。书生便把自己在梦中见到的情景告诉给荆山的人们。第二年清明节前夕，书生给父亲的坟墓上插满了清明吊，以弥补自己的过错。从此，不管是再忙的荆山农人，还是再远的异地学子，总是在清明节前夕回到故里，为亲人的坟墓插满清明吊。
